The Green Book
A discussion to launch the development of a new Green Book-inspired opera

Fynes Hall, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory
Saturday, January 18, 11:00am
We begin a multi-year development of a Green Book-inspired opera.
Book author and playwright Calvin A. Ramsey will visit several CMSD schools to discuss his children's' book, Ruth and The Green Book.
This opera launch discussion session will include topics covered in the school visits, Ruth and the Green Book, and broader topics surrounding Ramsey's first work, The Green Book, a two-act play about the difficulties African-Americans faced while traveling during the Jim Crow era based on his research on The Negro Motorist Green Book, a manual directing Blacks to “safe” restaurants, hotel and gas stations. Published from 1936 to 1963, this now obscure guide was once widely used to shield Blacks from segregated facilities in the South and throughout the country.
