Youth Community Artists

Participate in Opera Programs

The Community Artist and Young Artist programs involve greater Cleveland youth and adults in the creative art-making process of opera.

These programs provide opportunities for children, teens, and adult members of the Northeast Ohio community to explore and participate in the complex and interdisciplinary world of opera with leading professionals and teaching artists in the field.

Community Artist Program - Youth and Adult

Designed to spark interest in music and the arts, and to build a deeper sense of active community that is rooted in the creative art-making process.

An audition and interview process places community youth and adults in singing and acting roles in the ensemble and / or as members of the design and production crew for main stage productions according to their interests, experience, and skill-level.

Participants broaden their performance and artistic interpretation skills, and develop a unique understanding of the music, orchestration, plot, characters, libretto and design & production, as well as the use of operatic material in popular culture.

Participants then work alongside professional artists in rehearsals and main stage performances in the ensemble of mainstage performances.

Participation typically follows this schedule:

  • 6 - 8 weeks prior to the mainstage production opening date Workshops meet Monday evenings

  • 3 weeks prior to mainstage productions rehearsals meet Tuesday evenings and Saturdays in the late morning thru early evening

  • The week of the performance there is typically rehearsal every evening, which includes: Sunday Orchestra Rehearsal, Monday Tech Rehearsal, Tuesday Dress Rehearsal, Wednesday Final Dress Rehearsal, Friday Opening Performance 7:30pm, Sunday Closing Performance 3:00pm.

Young Artist Program - College - Aged Students

The Young Artist Program offers performance and professional development opportunities to help develop the next generation of rising stars in opera. The program focus is on college-aged students and emerging professionals from Northeast Ohio and students enrolled in the region's college, university, and conservatory music programs.

Young Artists perform in the ensembles and in supporting roles of main stage productions, and are featured in other selected performances throughout the season.

Young Artists also participate in master classes and workshops for performance and professional development and career advancement opportunities with leading industry professionals designed to develop their emerging talents and to help them build the skills and form a network of professional industry contacts necessary to take the next step in their professional careers.

Exceptionally talented Young Artists are chosen from conservatories and schools of music in the region including The Cleveland Institute of Music, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and The Kent State University Hugh A. Glauser School of Music.

These young artists work along side professional artists and youth and adult Community Artist Program participants in the chorus and supporting roles of mainstage productions, and are featured in selected Opera UpClose, New Opera Works {NOW} Festival and Outreach productions.
